What are cookies?

Cookies are files that can be downloaded to your device through web pages. They are essential tools for providing numerous services in the information society. Among other things, they allow a website to store and retrieve information about a user’s or device’s browsing habits and, depending on the information obtained, can be used to recognize the user and improve the service offered.

Types of cookies

Depending on the entity managing the domain from which the cookies are sent and processing the data obtained, cookies can be classified into two types:

  • First-party cookies: Sent to the user’s device from a domain managed by the editor providing the requested service.
  • Third-party cookies: Sent to the user’s device from a domain not managed by the editor but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

If cookies are installed from a domain managed by the editor, but the information collected is managed by a third party, they are not considered first-party cookies.

Another classification is based on the time they remain stored in the user’s browser:

  • Session cookies: Designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a webpage. They are generally used to store information that is only kept for the provision of the service requested in a single session (e.g., a list of purchased products).
  • Persistent cookies: The data remains stored on the user’s device and can be accessed and processed for a defined period by the cookie’s controller, ranging from a few minutes to several years.

Finally, cookies can be categorized by their purpose:

  • Technical cookies: Allow the user to navigate through a webpage, platform, or application and use different options or services such as traffic control, session identification, restricted area access, remembering order items, or completing purchase processes.
  • Customization cookies: Allow the user to access the service with predefined features based on certain criteria, such as language, browser type, or regional configuration.
  • Analysis cookies: Enable monitoring and analysis of users’ behavior on websites linked to these cookies to improve services based on usage data.
  • Advertising cookies: Enable the efficient management of advertising spaces.
  • Behavioral advertising cookies: Store user behavior information obtained through continuous observation of browsing habits to develop a specific profile for targeted advertising.
  • Social media cookies: Allow users to interact with content on different social platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn) and are governed by the social platform’s privacy policy.

Disabling and deleting cookies

You can allow, block, or delete cookies installed on your device by configuring your browser settings. Disabling cookies may limit some website functionalities. The way to disable cookies differs for each browser. Instructions are usually found in the “Tools” or “Options” menu or under the browser’s “Help” section.
